Game development is not just interesting process but profitable business as well
Game development is not just interesting process but profitable business as well. Game market volume is exceeding volume of movie industry and overtaking sports market, and incomes of some game development companies are estimated at billions of dollars. But what are prospects of the industry? In this article I will cite passages and diagrams from the leading world researching agencies: SuperData, Digi-Capital, NewZoo, SensorTower, Zenna Apps, AppAnnie, J’son & partners.
Game market volume
According to opinion of SuperData analysts, games earned $64,7 billion in 2015, specifically mobile games earned $24,7 billion:
But Digi-Capital analysts are more optimistic in their estimates and believe that in 2015 volume of the mobile market is $29 billion, with the assumption that in 2018 it will grow up to $45 billion by 2018. This information is provided by the information resource Venturebeat. NewZoo experts published research, where estimate of mobile games market volume is $30 billion:
But AppAnnie analysts estimated mobile market volume in 2015 as $34 billion:
It is interesting to compare those data with J’son & Partners estimate which they published in 2012:
According to that estimate mobile games should gain 15,4 billion dollars in 2016. The estimate was apparently wrong as in 2015 mobile games gained apparently more. It brings hope that analysts estimates for 2018 are also undervalued and games will gain even more.
Game market structure by regions
Diagrams of mobile games revenue distribution by regions from Digi-Capital and NewZoo:
Asia is leading by a significant margin. China, Korea and Japan represent four leaders in revenues in 2015. Among them China is the fastest in growth:
Games and publishers earning the most money
Data on games and publishers earning the most money are stated in SensorTower open report:
Not a single Russian company was among top companies:
Russian market structure
NewZoo published infographics for Russia from which it follows that the Russian market volume for all games profit for 2015 amounts $1,3 billion.
With that mobile market volume amounts $308 million. Those are Google data which were shared by the company at the Mobile Day conference. Most comprehensive open data for Russian mobile market are presented in infographics from Zenna Apps:
Upon close examination, it is possible to note a misprint. $88,1 does not mean Russian market volume, but 88,1 million users of mobile Internet according to estimate for 2018. Zenna Apps estimate Russian market volume in 2016 as $707 million. If it is necessary to consider not only figures but tendencies in development of games, platforms for their launch, genres and prospects of operation in GameDev in Russia, those subjects may be seen at "round table" in game industry. This story was described in other article at habr.
As we can see, analysts from different research companies may differ for billion dollars in their estimates of market volume, but all of them agree of one thing - the market will grow and develop[PS2] . And that is good!
